DESIGN TIPS & TRICKS
By Kat Nowotny
Here at Connect 5 Media, we love designing apps and recently we have noticed a lot of discussion of design trends. We thought it was about time that we made our own list.
1. Hidden Menus
It seems to be a popular trend to have hidden menus and smaller navigation on apps. This is probably due to audiences’ love of simple, clean, photography based apps. There are many ways that app designers accomplish these sliding menus. Now have you ever heard of a Hamburger? No not the delicious sandwich, but the hamburger menu. It’s the 3 little lines that you see in the corner of a lot of apps. This is the button that reveals the menu and it is a popular trend in designing apps. It leaves the home screen nice and open to display images on the home screen. Plus in a food ordering app with a hamburger menu seems to be the perfect fit.
2. Phablets, ok not really but how funny is that word?
If you don’t know what I’m talking about, well the Phablet, as I’m sure you can guess, is a device which is in between a phone and a tablet. An example of this is the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus that is much larger than it’s younger counterparts. You might be asking where design comes into the new larger screen and it is the need to consider how people now hold their devices. Users with these large screened devices can no longer hold the device in one hand. They now have to cradle the device in one hand while using the other to use the device. Design needs to follow how a user interacts with the app and here at Connect 5 Media we try to think of that at all times.
Who doesn’t love a bit of personality? When it comes to choosing apps it is no different. Have you ever noticed that apps and websites have their own personalities and feel to them. This personality usually comes from the brand’s tone. You want everything about your brand to say exactly who you are and what you do. Whether it is a serious personality to network or connect with colleagues or a fun, lighthearted energy to post your latest selfies. Apps have personalities and it seems as though the current trend is to push this personality to the forefront.
4. Brands pushing to engage
We all know that brand engagement no longer stops after the purchase of a product, but now it seems to be going one step further. Of course your brand is on various types of social media connecting to consumers. But what is next? You want your brand at their finger tips, but take a second and look at your phone. How many apps do you have on your home screen, or better yet how many apps to have on your phone? As a brand you would love if your app icon was on everyone’s home screen, but since that might not happen, the new solution is push notifications. When a user opens an app they will have a little pop up that asks if they are ok receiving push notifications, most users will say yes. These notifications will then pop up and tell the user of upcoming events, deals and more. Now no one wants to be bombarded by notifications, but who is going to say no to free garlic bread with their pizza? It is a great way to remind customers that you’re there.
5. Mobile Payments
People don’t want to pull out cash anymore. Think about Apple Pay, the Starbucks Mobile App, and there are tons more. Everyone even orders and shops online. It seems like now you can buy almost anything with a press of a button. Yes not everyone is ready to use their phone to pay when they go to the store, but the trend is moving to convenience purchases. Now what does that mean for your brand and app, well you need to make it as easy as possible for your consumer to make a purchase. This means have your ordering platform within the app. Whether it’s the the loyalty card, the gift cards or ordering takeaway, it should be right there and simple to use. I mean if I’m hungry and don’t have cash, that shouldn’t stop me from ordering the dim sum I really want, right?
